100 Flowers

“When things are abnormal, our obligation is to turn life normal and worth living for.” — Karim Wasfi

We live in a mixed-up and troubled world. It’s wearing some of us down. We do what we can, but to what end?

In a moment desperate hope, I took a piece of scrap cardboard and drew a flower. “What if I give it a way?” I thought. “Would the world be just a tiny bit better?”

Wayne Gagnon - 100 Flowers Project

What if I draw four flowers and give them away? Then would the world be a tiny bit better?

What if I draw nine… or sixteen…

…or twenty five? …and give them all away… Would the world be a tiny bit better?

Wayne Gagnon - 100 Flowers Project

How about one hundred? What if I draw one hundred flowers on scraps of cardboard and give them away? Would this  mixed-up and troubled world be a tiny bit better?

Karim Sasafi, conductor of the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra, plays his cello in the rubble of bombings across Baghdad. This man gives me hope. I admire his resolve to make this a better world in the midst of chaos and violence. His work inspired my 100 flowers project.

I have one hundred 2×3 inch hand-drawn flowers on scraps of cardboard. I drew them for no other reason than to make this world a tiny bit better. Would you like one?  If so, email your mailing address to info@waynegagnon.com and I will send one out right away. I expect nothing in return.

I wish you peace and love, my friends.

Mother of Exiles

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Words from The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus
